Local Talk: In Search of Real News in 2017

Fact or Fake banner

Whether we receive our news from the traditional sources, newspapers, television, radio; or from the likes of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, web sites and similar social media tools; what has become evident is that our search for the truth in a field of information has been like walking through landscapes with hidden fields of quicksand!

We live in very interesting times.

Would you like some way to make sense of it all? If you do, join us at The HMAUS Town Hall 2017.

We’ve invited four Hawaii journalists to share their thoughts about the challenges journalists face in a world of political upheaval and global conflict. The audience will have an opportunity to ask questions and share their thoughts.

Panelists

  • Jared Kuroiwa, KHON TV
  • Chad Blair, Civil Beat
  • Catherine Toth Fox, Honolulu Magazine
  • Angela Keen, former television anchor and reporter

The meeting is free and open to the public. Registration is required because seating is limited.

I’m reminded these days of the words from The Charge of the Light Brigade, by Alfred, Lord Tennyson’s epic 1854 poem about the Battle of Balaclava during the Crimean War.

Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley’d and thunder’d;
Storm’d at with shot and shell,
Boldly they rode and well,
Into the jaws of Death,
Into the mouth of Hell
Rode the six hundred.

Similarly, players known and unknown, today bombard us with information of all kinds, on all fronts. Which are the truths with which all of us need to safely and confidently go about our lives? Which are not?

We live in very interesting times, indeed!
