In the morning we have an opportunity to have a comfortable chat with Blaine Fergerstrom who can best be described as the Hawaiian Superman of Multi-Media Communciations.

We’ll also have an HI Touch Tech Open Help Clinic in the afternoon session. For those of you unfamiliar with HI Touch Tech… It’s a FREE open-forum help clinic. We’ll field questions and puzzles you bring and explore solutions and fixes. It’s a simple format based on knowledge sharing amongst peers. No lectures, no agenda, no Apple dogma, just tech talk.

So if you have questions about your hardware, software or the network—how to do it, how to fix it, how to understand it—come to HI Touch.

The HI Touch Chat with Blaine Fergerstrom will be a rare treat as we’ll have an opportunity to have a conversation with one of the most talented and prolific communications technologists of our times. Eugene Villaluz and Terrence Young will host and facilitate the Chat with Blaine. Like HI Touch Tech — it’s not a lecture, it’s a conversation. You’ll want to make a list of things you’d like to know from the man who’s over all these years set the standard for multi-media communications.

When: Saturday, March 8; 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Where: Capital One 360 Cafe, 1958 Kalakaua Avenue

Cost: Absolutely FREE

Blaine Fergerstrom

Who is Blaine Fergerstrom?

“I have been described as a ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of communications.”

Blaine Fergerstrom is an award-winning multiple-media journalist. He is a writer, editor, photographer, videographer, publisher, print producer, graphic artist and webmaster.

Blaine has extensive experience managing creative teams. His tools for print and Web include: Quark XPress, InDesign, Photoshop, FreeHand, Dreamweaver, FileMaker, FTP, mail server and mailing list software, MS Office, iMovie, GarageBand, and Final Cut Pro.

He’s done some radio/audio work, video editing and production and worked as an advertising agency production manager. He has experience with AfterEffects and the Avid Video Composer.

Blaine has managed web servers since 1995 at Starr Seigle McCombs Advertising where he started with WebStar Mac servers. For the starbulletin.com in 1996 the server he managed was Solaris (Unix), and when he returned to starbulletin.com in 2005, it was Red Hat (Linux).

He has launched and concurrently managed hundreds of local websites. Blaine has recently began to specialize in WordPress as a content management system (CMS) and has launched dozens of WordPress websites.

During his tenure at Kamehameha Schools as Education Webmaster, Blaine configured multiple Mac OS X (BSD Unixbased) computers as web servers. As Webmaster for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, he configured, installed and managed a remote Mac OS X Server 10.5 machine with Apple RAID connected by Fibre Channel. Since 2003 Blaine has managed a Mac OS X-based web server out of his home. He has installed, configured and run dozens of PHP/MySQL scripts to run on these servers. His Unix/Linux/Mac OS X machines have all run some flavor of Apache/MySQL/PHP.

All of this would fill a lifetime for many people, but wait… there’s more…

Blaine has taught technology classes to middle school and high school students at Kamehameha and junior and senior college journalism students at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa School of Communications. And he has taught quarterly adult education classes on “how to make your first web page” for the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Outreach College since 1997.

Blaine Fergerstrom will be the featured guest at the HI Touch Learning Clinic on Saturday, March 8 at the Alii Room, Capital One 360 Cafe.
